After an initial examination, your physiotherapist will work with you to create a personalised treatment plan. Physiotherapy treatment may include:

  • Strengthening and injury prevention exercises

Vascular oedema or fluid retention is the build of fluid in the body’s tissue, most commonly affecting the legs and feet (and at times the upper limb). Common causes of swelling may include venous insufficiency, heart failure, renal failure, deep vein thrombosis, trauma and infection. It may lead to skin tightness, heavy limbs, joint stiffness and skin breakdown/ infection and wound complications.

Referrals need to be made in conjunction with your treating Vascular Surgeon, Cardiologist, Renal Specialist or treating GP as there is often the need for arterial or venous studies to be completed prior to the application of compression. If there is a wound care team also involved it is best to co-ordinate our part in this process. Wounds cannot be dressed as part of this consultation.

We offer a qualified occupational therapist to assist with the following therapies:

  • Compression bandaging involving short stretch, Coban and Coban 2.
  • Prescription and review of specialised compression garments both off the shelf and custom made
  • Exercise prescription
  • Education on skin hygiene to reduce infection
  • Education and trial of donning and doffing devices and other long handled equipment as part of your overall compression plan.
